Embracing Winter’s Warmth: Simple Creature Comforts for You and Your Dog

As the cold winds and early nights of winter settle in, there's something truly magical about cocooning myself and my dogs in warmth and comfort. As pet parents, we understand the joy of sharing these moments with our dogs, creating a cozy haven to weather the chilly days and get us through to spring! Join me in celebrating this ‘season of snug’ with my personal list of comfy activities.

Here are just a few of my favorite winter comforts that you may want to share with your dog, too!

1. INDULGE IN a movie marathon

This winter, my dogs Scout and Torre and I are diving into our favorite movie series. I love the magic and history of The Crown, for instance. What’s yours? Harry Potter? Game of Thrones? The Lord of the Rings? If you’re into popcorn, share a nibble or two from your bowl with your dog, but maybe choose something a bit healthier — like a few training treats — during breaks.

2. Sign up for those dog or puppy training lessons you’ve been thinking about!

Winter is the perfect time to think about new opportunities for you and your dog to learn together! Are you excited by thoughts of long hikes on a loose leash with your dog? Maybe you’ve added – or are thinking about adding – a new puppy to your life. Or maybe it has occurred to you that winter would be the perfect quiet time to work on your dog’s anxiety issues. Reach out to me and let’s talk about how to get dog training on your list of winter or early spring activities.

As an extra special incentive, I’m offering $20 off one lesson (only $75) or $75 off any package if you book with me before the end of January!

3. Declutter and refresh

The winter season is a great time to embrace the feeling of renewal. Tackle clutter in your living space, both yours and your dog’s. I’m planning on going through the big toy basket that’s gotten too full. Let’s just say goodbye (or stash away) those extra toys that our dogs ignore. Toss that tattered or somewhat stinky dog bed, and make space for a few new, clean, cozy additions. It's a therapeutic way to start the year.

4. scenic winter walks

Break out your coziest winter gear and embark on a scenic walk with your dog! My Doodles don’t mind being bundled up in sweaters, so we like to get out into the winter chill and check out nearby parks and nature trails. If your dog has a good furry insulating coat – or doesn’t mind sporting a warm sweater – get out of the house and explore a new or favorite nature spot together.

5. fireside story time

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace or woodstove, settle together in front of the flames with a warm blanket and a book. Like kids, most dogs love being read to. And everyone loves the relaxing comfort of a crackling fire.

6. A winter photo shoot

I had some beautiful professional photographs taken of Scout, Torre and me for my website, by Lori of Red Leash Pet Photography, and I’d love to get some winter images some day soon, too. Why not capture the magic of winter by organizing a photo shoot with your dog? Pick a scenic outdoor location or create a cozy setup at home and ask a friend or family member to get creative with their smartphone. Or go ahead and reach out to a professional photographer like Lori for images you’ll treasure forever!

Don’t let the winter blahs get you down. Create lasting memories with your dog!

Remember, the key to really enjoying these activities is to pick what you and your dog would really love doing together. It’s okay to get a little outside of your comfort zone (exploring a new trail in the snow, or jump into a dog training lesson) but don’t push your pup into an environment you know might make them uncomfortable or anxious.

Would you like to explore the idea of training sessions this winter or in the coming spring? I’m always available! Reach out to me here.

Stay warm, enjoy the cozy, and make this winter a season to remember!

Lisa
